Paul Holmes MP and Chesterfield Liberal Democrats: Listening to and Fighting for Chesterfield

Labour Rejects Fairer Tax System

12.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Wed 18th Jul 2007

Commenting on the debate on their taxes for the wealthy in the House Of Commons, Liberal Democrat MP from Chesterfield, Paul Holmes, said:

"The Liberal Democrats proposed a system of fairer, simple, and greener taxes but the Labour government rejected this plan in a vote in the Commons on Monday.

For too long Labour has allowed the wealthy to enjoy reliefs on capital gains tax and stamp duty, while the poorer people pay more.

It is imperative that we ensure that our tax system is fair and progressive. The gap between the rich and the poor has grown since 1997. It is time the government takes action on this."
