Paul Holmes MP and Chesterfield Liberal Democrats: Listening to and Fighting for Chesterfield

Closure Of Local Factory Appalling News

12.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 16th Jan 2007

Commenting on the announcement today of the proposed closure of the GKN Sheepbridge Stokes Limited cylinder liner manufacturing plant in Chesterfield, Paul Holmes, Liberal Democrat MP for Chesterfield, said:

"This is appalling news for 420 skilled local workers. I have visited the factory in recent years and I was impressed with the world standard products produced there.

"I have written to the Company's Head Office asking them to reconsider and to provide more details of their plans.

"Coming at a time when Gordon Brown's policies have produced unemployment of 1.7 million, the highest since 1997, and inflation of 3%, the highest since 1992, this is a clear indication of the failure of the Labour Government."
