Unveiling of a plaque for Joe “Ten Goal” Payne

The local Payne family came to the Local Forum and Brimington Parish Council to ask for a plaque to be put up celebrating the feat of Joe "Ten Goal" Payne, who was the only person ever to have scored 10 goals in a football league match.

The Chairman of the FA, Geoff Thompson, who is from Newbold, took time out of his busy schedule to come and unveil the plaque on the Miners Arms, whose car park now stands on the site of the house where Joe was born, and over the road from the Manor Rec where he used to play footie.

The plaque was unveiled 70 years to the day after the winning match.
