CARERS NEED MORE CARE

12.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Fri 8th Dec 2006

Commenting on new research released today on Carers Rights Day by leading charity Carers UK which showed that a staggering 4490 people face new caring responsibilities in Chesterfield each year Paul Holmes, Liberal Democrat MP for Chesterfield, said:

"Many carers - people looking after relatives, friends and neighbours who are caring for disabled, chronically ill and frail relatives miss out on benefits, practical support and information.

"I urge anyone who is a carer and who would like greater support to call the Carers UK helpline on 0808 808 7777."

"If carers do not get the financial and practical support they need, they suffer from a poor quality of life, cutting back on the essentials they need to get by, and paying a heavy price in terms of their own health and wellbeing.

"Too many people still do not know what a carer is, yet they save the economy £57 billion each year. "
