CALL TO CELEBRATE ST GEORGE'S DAY FOR THE ENGLISH AND REMEMBERANCE DAY COULD BE A DAY OF CELEBRATION FOR BRITIAN

13 Nov 2008

Speaking in Parliament, Paul Holmes, Liberal Democrat MP for Chesterfield called for English celebrations of St George's Day on the same scale as the Scottish and Irish celebrate their patron saints days.

Speaking during the debate, Paul said

"But, a British day which is being proposed by the Government should be a unifying event not a divisive one imposed from above

"The obvious date to choose is Remembrance Day, which the USA and France both commemorate as Veterans Day.

"I attended two very moving Remembrance day ceremonies in Chesterfield and Staveley. Such ceremonies are seeing record attendance levels. After all the fears a few years ago that as old soldiers die out people would stop attending Remembrance day events, the crowds are getting bigger, certainly in Chesterfield and Staveley.

"This is a day when all parts of British Society including Gurkha, those of Indian sub continent and Caribbean origin can reflect upon the free, democratic and pluralistic society that Britain is."
