CUSTOMS BLUNDER FARCICAL

Commenting on the news that millions of pounds seized from tobacco smugglers over the past eight years will have to be returned because Customs officers unlawfully confiscated their assets, Liberal Democrat Home Affairs Spokesman Paul Holmes MP said,

"This has been a complete farce from start to finish. It is staggering to think that not only have people been jailed and lost their homes because of a law that no longer exists, millions of pounds could end up being paid back to low level criminals because of sheer incompetence.

"This kind of confusion is the sad but inevitable result of the Government's obsession with creating an endless succession of new laws. It has created so many now that even its own agencies can't keep up."
