Emergency, What Emergency? by Emily Coy, PPC Chesterfield

Last July the Labour run Borough Council passed a Climate Emergency motion.

But they seem to be operating on a different meaning of the word emergency to everyone else. Despite Labour having demanded a couple of weeks earlier that the Conservative run County Council should be Carbon Free by 2030, they rejected this date for Labour run Chesterfield.

They also rejected the idea that definite proposals for tackling the Climate Emergency should be brought back for action within 6 months even though, you guessed it, they had proposed a six-month deadline for the County Council.

Instead Labour gave themselves 8 months to respond in Chesterfield. But nearly 2 months later they have only just advertised for people who are interested in joining a working group to come up with proposals for action. Obviously, the working group has not even started meeting yet because it doesn't exist yet, with 25% of the allotted time already gone.

Where is the urgency to tackle the emergency? When will Labour stop playing political games and treat this Climate Emergency seriously?
