Liberal Democrats retain control of Chesterfield Borough Council

Liberal Democrats have strengthened their grip on Chesterfield Borough Council, winning 38 seats in yesterday's elections (Thursday, May 3).

They first took control of the Council in 2003, when they ended almost 30 years of Labour rule by taking 36 seats to Labour's 12.

In this year's elections, the Liberal Democrats won two seats from Labour and also regained a seat they lost since the last election when a former Liberal Democrat councillor became an Independent.

There was a 46% turnout of voters in the election.

In St Leonard's Ward, there was a recount after two Liberal Democrat candidates finished equal third, with 925 votes each, in the three-seat ward. Lots had to be drawn between Barry Bingham and John Henry Stinton, with Barry Bingham successful.
