PUSH FOR INSTANT JUSTICE DRIVES WEDGE BETWEEN CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM

18 Aug 2009

Commenting on the news that magistrates have warned that police should not be given more powers to issue on-the-spot fines for careless driving because they cannot be "relied on" to handle them appropriately, Liberal Democrat Home Affairs Spokesman Paul Holmes MP said,

"It is a sorry state of affairs when the Government's push for instant justice is driving a wedge between different parts of our criminal justice system.

"The police have been given wide-ranging powers without adequate debate. It is deeply concerning that even judges think they will abuse them."
